Global Warming
Or, The Greenhouse Effect
At present the alarming report of the world is that the climate is undergoing (অনুভব করা) a significant (গুরুত্বপূর্ণ) change. All the reports provide strong evidence (প্রমাণ) that the world’s temperatures (তাপমাত্রা) are increasing day by day. This increase in global warming is caused by the increased amount of carbon dioxide around the earth. Most climatologists believe that the greenhouse effect is the likely cause of this global warming.
There are some cold countries in the world. They cannot grow crops like in hot countries. They grow them in a glass house. It is called a greenhouse. In the greenhouse, the heat of the sun enters through the glass and keeps the house warm. This heat is trapped in that house. When it is night or it becomes very cold, the heat keeps the trees or plants warm. The Greenhouse effect means the gradual warming of the air surrounding the earth as a result of heat being trapped by environmental pollution. This pollution is caused by the destruction and burning down of tropical rainforests, (গ্রীষ্ম মণ্ডলীয় বনাঞ্চল) by the cars, buses, trucks, and vehicles on the city streets, by the rapid growth of industry, by the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in packaging and manufacturing commercial products, by the use of detergents and so on. However, the main culprits (দুশমন) for global warming are carbon dioxide gas produced by the burning of fossil fuels and forests and pollutants (দূষণকারী পদার্থ) such as methane and chlorofluorocarbons. Many European countries, including the U.S.A, Russia, and Canada are mainly responsible for the greenhouse effect. They produce greenhouse gases profusely (প্রচুর পরিমাণে) which are responsible for the rise in temperature.
Climatologists (জলবায়ুবিজ্ঞানী) predict (ভবিষ্যৎবাণী দেওয়া) that midway through this century, temperatures may rise by as much as 4°C. The ice caps in the North and the South poles have already started melting (গলা). This could catastrophically (ব্যাপক ভিত্তিতে) reduce mankind’s ability to grow food. destroy or severely damage wildlife and wilderness, raise sea levels, and flood coastal areas and farmland. The alarming news about Bangladesh is that as a result of the rise in sea level, the lower southern part of the country may one day go underwater.
