Composition: A Day Labourer

A Day Labourer

A day labourer is a common figure in both villages and cities. But in the villages, we see innumerable (অসংখ্য) day labourers. Most of them are agricultural labourers. They are landless and illiterate. A day labourer works in the land of others. He has to maintain his family with his daily income. Every morning a day labourer comes from his house with a towel and a tool. He uses the tool in his work. Sometimes, he works in the agricultural field. Sometimes, he tills the land and sow’s seed. He also digs soil and weeds the land. Some days he breaks bricks and helps a bricklayer (রাজমিস্ত্রি). Usually, he takes his breakfast in the field. He starts his work in the morning. He smokes when he works in the field. Sometimes, he neglects his work. At noon he has a break of about two hours. Then he goes home to take dinner. If he is hired from a distant village, he goes to the host’s house. Going there, he has his bath and takes his dinner. After dinner, he comes to the field again. Then he begins his work again and continues it till sunset. At the end of his work, he gets his daily remuneration (পারিশ্রমিক). He becomes happy at this.

A day labourer is not a happy man in his conjugal (দাম্পত্য) life. He has to maintain his family with his scanty income. After his daily work, he goes to the market to buy his daily necessaries. He brings them to his house. His wife cooks food for him in the evening. Sometimes, his wife rebukes (তিরস্কার করা) him because he cannot maintain his family properly. He has no savings. If he does not go to work due to illness, his family has to pass a miserable time. His wife and children have to work to maintain the family. Sometimes, a day laborer drinks alcohol and beats his wife and children. The daily income of a day labourer ranges between 100 and 150 taka. It fluctuates (উঠানামা) at different times of the year. However, a day labourer has a carefree life.

A day labourer is a great friend to people. The moneyed people cannot do without him. No high-rise building can be built without the labour of the day labourers. Even any landlord cannot produce his crops without his toil. A day labourer works selflessly (নিঃস্বার্থভাবে). The people of the whole country become benefited by his work.

The existing socio-economic condition of our country makes a lot of day labourers. A day labourer works hard and the whole nation gets the fruit of his toil (পরিশ্রম). Though a day labourer leads a miserable life, we cannot live without him.
