Co-education
Co-education (সহ-শিক্ষা) means the teaching of both the male (পুরুষ) and female (নারী) students in the same educational institutions. In every country of the world primary students are taught in the same educational institutions. Guardians (অভিভাবক) do not object (আপত্তি করা) to the teaching of the small boys and girls together. But there is a debate (বিতর্ক) about co-education from secondary to university levels. Those who support co-education are of the opinion (মতামত) that if both the boys and girls are taught together, they will be able to receive education in friendly environment. Conversely (পক্ষান্তরে), those who are against co education opine that as adolescence (a) period is the most critical period in the life of a boy and a girl, young boys and girls should not be taught together in the same institution.
The strong argument (যুক্তি) for co-education is that the attitude (মনোভাব) of women in the present world has changed a lot. Women are now conscious (সচেতন) of their rights, duties and responsibilities (দায়িত্ব). They are in no way inferior (নিকৃষ্ট) to men. So they do not want to lag behind men. If they read in the same educational institutions with men, they will be able to obtain the same education and enjoy the same privileges (সুবিধা) and opportunities (সুযোগ). If both men and women do not receive the same education, they will not be able to contribute (অবদান রাখা) to the development activities of their country in a proper way. On the other hand, if women read with men in the same educational institutions, they will get the opportunity to broaden (প্রশস্ত করা) their outlook and develop a competitive mind. Therefore, nobody can deny the necessity of co-education. We know that college and university students know how to differentiate (পার্থক্য করা) between the right and the wrong. As they are mature (f) and wise, there is little chance of their going astray (বিপথে যাওয়া).
Those who are against co-education are of the opinion that free mixing of the young boys and girls in their adolescent (কৈশোর) period is very dangerous. When young boys and girls mix or move freely, devil (শয়তান) remains between them and tries to lead them astray (তাদেরকে বিপথে নেওয়া). As a result, there is every possibility (সম্ভাবনা) of their being involved in immoral activities. In fact, free mixing between the students of opposite sex disturbs the normal development of their mind. Nowadays, as many people of opposite sex work together, they are involved in different kinds of heinous (ঘৃণ্য) sex related activities.
I am also dead against co-education. Some people may argue that if women mix freely with men by putting on yashmak, there will not be any chance of their going astray. But I do not agree to their opinion. I believe every woman should work in her place of work by wearing yashmak (বোরকা). But we should put emphasis (জোড়) not only on the wearing (পরিধান) of yashmak but also on the purity (পবিত্রতা) of the mind. In co-educational institutions as students of the opposite sex study together, it is quite difficult for them to save themselves from the conspiracy (ষড়যন্ত্র) of the devil. So the students of the opposite sex should not be allowed to study in the same institutions.
