Handicrafts of Bangladesh
Handicraft (হস্তশিল্প) is an activity such as sewing or making baskets, in which we can use our hands in a skillful way to make things. Bangladesh has a good tradition (ঐতিহ্য) in the production of handicraft goods (দ্রব্য). Handloom weaving is the most important handicraft industry in Bangladesh (Handicrafts of Bangladesh). Dhaka is famous for handloom weaving. The world-famous Muslin ‘Sharees’ were produced by the craftsmen of Dhaka. Now a-days, the craftsmen (কারিগর) of Dhaka produce fine Sharees ornamented with ‘zoris’. The famous “zamdani sharee’ is the product of the artisans (কারিগর) of Dhaka. The coloured ‘sharees’ of Tangail, Pabna, Kushtia. Bagerhat and Joypurhat are well-known for their beauty and durability (টেকসই হওয়ার গুণ). The demand for these ‘sharees’ is increasing day by day. And all about a good product & represent a very positive sign Handicrafts of Bangladesh.
Spinning by the ‘charka’ with the help of hands is carried on extensively (ব্যাপকভাবে) in our country. Khaddar clothes made of handspun yarn are produced in Noakhali and Comilla in large quantities. Bracelets (বালা), bangles (বালা), chains, rings, combs, necklaces, caskets (অলংকার), buttons (বোতাম), paperweights (পেপার ওয়েট), small images (প্রতিমা) etc. made of the conch (সংখ্য), the oyster (ঝিনুক), and the ivory (হাতির দাত) are wonderful products (উৎপাদিত দ্রব্য) of the craftsmen (কারিগর).
Cane and bamboo works are two of the famous crafts of Bangladesh. Chairs, tables, benches, sofas, racks and shelves of many designs are made in every district of Bangladesh. Sylhet is an important centre of cane industry in Bangladesh. It also produces ‘shetalpatis’ (শীতল পার্টি) which are noted (প্রসিদ্ধ) throughout the country.
Pottery is also a familiar craft of Bangladesh. The potters (কুম্ভকর) make earthen (মাটির তৈরি) pots, pitchers (কলস) and other necessary wares. The Hindu craftsmen make different kinds of images on the occasion of the puza.
The silk products of Rajshahi are also wonderful handicrafts of Bangladesh. The carpenters also produce different items of furniture for household and other uses. The embroidery (চিকনের কাজ) works and other handiworks like kanthas (কাঁথা) etc. by our simple village women are familiar throughout the country. If our government gives economic assistance (সাহায্য) to our artisans for making handicraft products, our country will get rid of (মুক্তি পাওয়া economic crisis (সংকট).
