International Mother Language Day
International Mother Language Day is an important day in our national life. Mother language means the language we learn from our mother. In this sense, Bangla is our mother language. We got this language as our state language through much struggle on the 21″ of February 1952. The 21 February has been regarded as the International Mother Language Day. Now the day is observed all over the world. It is observed in memory of the language martyrs (শহীদ).
The Pakistani rulers declared Urdu as the state language. But the people of the then East Pakistan contradicted (প্রতিবাদ করা) the declaration. They demanded Bangla as the state language of the then East Pakistan. But the Pakistani rulers did not pay heed to their demand. So, a conflict (দ্বন্দ্ব) grew between the rulers and the ruled. A flame of protest spread all over the then East Pakistan. The rulers imposed (আরোপ) section 144 on the city of Dhaka. But some students of our country brought out a procession in violation of section 144 on the 21″ February 1952. The students were locked in a clash with the police. The police opened fire on the procession. Salam, Barkat, Rafique and Jabbar were killed on the spot.
Our Mother Language Day has been recognized as the International Mother Language Day. But it has a long history. It has not been possible overnight. A Bangladeshi namely, Rafiqul Islam living in Canada is always remembered for it. He is the first man who tried his best to demand the 21″ February as the International Mother Language Day. He sent a letter to the UN Secretary General in 1998. Later our government tried hard and became successful. The UNESCO declared our Mother Language Day as the International Mother Language Day. The declaration was given on the 17th of November 1999. Now the day is observed all over the world.
In Bangladesh it is observed as a National Mourning Day. Our national flag is kept half-mast on the day. All the Shaheed Minars are covered with flowers. Different programmes are taken to mark the day. Lakhs of people gather round the Shaheed Minars to show respect to the martyrs. We rise early and go to the Sheed Minars bare-footed (খালি পায়ে). We sing the song ‘Amar Baher Ratke Ragano…. Radio, TV and newspapers highlight (g) the significance of the day. Thus, the day is observed in due solemnity (ভাবগাম্ভীর্য) and respect.
The day has a great importance in our national life. It encouraged us to fight against the Pakistani rulers and we became free. We have earned name and fame for this day. Now the whole world knows our country and our language. The world respects and salutes us. In fine, we can say that the International Mother Language Day is our pride. The day has given us a new recognition. The day has given us name and fame. So, we are proud of the day.
