Price Hike

Or, Spiral

At present price hike is a common problem in Bangladesh. The prices of essential commodities are increasing by leaps and bounds (লাগামহীনভাবে) day by day. As a result, the consumers (ভোক্তা) are being very badly affected. Particularly the low-income group and the toiling millions (শ্রমজীবী) of our country are suffering much due to the increasing high prices of daily necessities. The prices of all necessary things such as rice, dal, sugar, garlic, onion, oil, vegetables, clothes, fuel, etc. are increasing day by day.

Hoarding (মজুদদারি) has been an important cause of price hike. Hoarding is present not only at the growers’ and distributors’ level but also at the consumers’ (ভোক্তা) level. If both the producers and the consumers hoard essential commodities, their normal supply is bound to be low. The buyers do not buy things directly from the growers. These things come to them through the middlemen who hoard things in order to get more profit from the business.

Smuggling and black-marketing (পাচার ও কালোবাজারি) have become major causes of price hike in Bangladesh. Food and fuel are being constantly smuggled across the border. Smugging has undoubtedly stirred the price balance (দ্রব্যমূল্য ভারসাম্য) of essential things. A section of people are associated with black marketing. They earn a lot of black money and create many problems in the society.

The other causes of price spiral are: the shortage of supply and the dishonest activities of the dealers. If something is not produced much in the country, it is imported from foreign countries. The dealers who get permits to import things are mainly dishonest and they want to make more profit by increasing prices. The government cannot tackle (মোকাবিলা) this problem fully because many permit-holders get permits by illegal means. These dishonest permit-holders sell their imported items at a price higher than the original price. There is only a government organization for importing essential things. It is the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh ((TCB). Its manpower and network are not widespread. As a result, TCB cannot control the price hikes.

Floods, drought, storms, and cyclones have always brought havoc (ধ্বংস) to our economy. These disasters are also responsible for the price spiral. The prevailing population explosion (জনসংখ্যা বিস্ফোরণ) is also responsible for the price hike.

It is not easy to control price hike. By raising public awareness, increasing production, and controlling population growth, this price hike can be controlled.

Law enforcement agencies should be vigilant (সতর্ক) to observe the prices of the necessary things. The government should punish hoarders, smugglers and black marketers so that they cannot create artificial crises of the commodities. Proper monitoring of market prices of essential things is also necessary to control the price spiral in Bangladesh.
