The game of Cricket is a very interesting game. It is played everywhere in this world. But it is the national game of the English. The game is played between two teams. Each team has 11 players. A perfectly (সম্পূর্ণভাবে) flat and smooth ground is necessary for it. A cricket field must have turfs (চাবড়ি ঘাস) that make the playground smooth. Two wooden bats, a ball and two sets of stamps are necessary for playing cricket. The distance of the pitch is 22 yards.
In cricket defense is very important and victory often depends upon good fielding. Three fields’ men are placed on the on-side: one at square-leg, one at mid-on and the third at long-on. Six are put on the off-side; three at slip, one at cover-point, one at mid-off and the last at long-off. Of the remaining (অবশিষ্ট) two, one is the bowler and the other is the wicketkeeper. The arrangement (a) of the fielders, however, is often changed by the captain according to his necessity. There are two types of matches. One is one day match and the other is five-day test match. A match is played the whole day. The day is divided into two parts- one from 10 am to 1 p.m. and the other from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The play begins at the signal of the umpire and the bowler starts bowling. After every six balls the bowler’s over ends. The batsman may be out in different ways such as: “bowled out’ run out ‘stumped out’, ‘caught out’, ‘leg before wicket out’ and ‘hit-wicket out”.
A run is made when the batsman after hitting (আঘাত করা) the ball changes position (অবস্থান) once with his partner before the ball is received at the wickets. If the ball crosses the boundary line, four runs are scored. Again, if it flies over the boundary line, six runs are scored. When the ball hits the stamps, the batsman is said to be bowled out and when the hitting ball gives a catch, he is caught out. Again, while making a run if the ball is thrown against the stumps before he has reached the wicket, the batsman is run out. If the ball hits his leg before the wicket, he is leg before wicket (L.B.W) out. In this way the team which scores the highest runs will win the match.
Cricket teaches manliness (সাহসিকতা), obedience, patience (ধৈর্য), perseverance (অধ্যাবসায়) and cooperation (সহযোগিতা). But fairness is the essence (নির্যাস) of the game.
Though cricket is the national game of Great Britain, it is played all over the world. Bangladesh has become a Test match playing nation since 2000. We have achieved victory over many strong teams of the world.
