Composition: Should Students Take Part in Politics?

Most of the students of our country start taking part in politics the moment they get admitted to colleges and universities. Gradually (ক্রমশ), brushing away (উপেক্ষা করা) their studies, they become actively involved in politics. But actually, should students do politics? (Should Students Take Part in Politics?

Our political leaders and intellectuals (বুদ্ধিজীবী) are divided in their opinions (মতামত) about student politics. Some of them opine that if students take part in politics, they will be able to administer (শাসন করা) the country properly when they become the leaders of the country after the completion of their education. Conversely (পক্ষান্তরে), others are dead against student politics. Their opinion is that if students are involved in political activities instead of concentrating on their studies, they will not be able to be properly educated. Moreover, the immoral political leaders of the country use them as their puppets either to remain in power or to occupy power. As a result, student politicians become immoral and greedy. Therefore, students should keep aloof from political activities. It is clear to us that there are arguments both for and against student politics in our country.

In our country, a citizen gets a franchise (ভোটাধিকার) when he/she is 18 years old. Therefore, college or university students who are 18 years old also get the right to vote. As they get the right to vote, they should be politically conscious (সচেতন ). They can boldly (সাহসের সাথে) protest (প্রতিবাদ করা) against the misdeeds (অপকর্ম) of the government and any kind of injustice (অন্যায়) and corruption. We should not forget the active role of the students in the Language Movement in 1952, the Mass Upsurge in 1969 the Liberation War in 1971. Therefore students should take part in politics for the greater interest of the nation.

 

But the picture of our present political situation is completely different. Our students are now devoid (বিহীন) of morality. Dishonest political leaders use them as their tools. They are shamelessly (নির্লজ্জভাবে) used to taking part in many kinds of anti-social activities. They are working as the agents of different political parties in the guise of student politics. As they are intolerant (অসহিষ্ণু) and unruly (উচ্ছৃঙ্খল), they clash (সংঘর্ষে লিপ্ত হওয়া) with one another over insignificant (তুচ্ছ) causes. It is very sad that like many dishonest and greedy politicians student political activists are also becoming dishonest and greedy. Instead of studying attentively, they remain busy earning money in an illegal way. Many of them occupy seats in college hostels or university halls. Moreover, they create a reign of terror on the college or university campus. Therefore, student politics should be stopped as early as possible.

Thus we see that student politics has both merits and demerits (দোষ). If student political leaders not only concentrate on their studies but also do politics for the welfare (কল্যাণ) of the country, we will appreciate their role. On the contrary, if they do politics only to be involved in nasty activities, they should not be allowed to dabble in politics. Both the ruling party and the opposition should reach an agreement on this issue.
