The Autobiography of A Rickshaw Puller

A rickshaw puller is a man who pulls (টানা) the rickshaw to earn money. I am a rickshaw puller. Every day I pull a rickshaw from morning to midnight (মধ্যরাত) with a view to earning money so that I can maintain (চালানো) my family consisting of four members. My son is a university student and my daughter is a college student. I need at least thirty thousand taka to maintain my family and bear the educational expenses (খরচপত্র) of my children. By the grace (কৃপায়) of God it is not at all impossible for me to earn more than one thousand taka a day.

I have rented (ভাড়া নেওয়া) a tin-shed house which has three rooms. The monthly rent (ভাড়া) of the house is eight thousand taka. My wife is expert (দক্ষ) in sewing (সেলাই করা) clothes. I have bought a sewing machine. By sewing the clothes of our locality she earns more than fifteen thousand taka each month.

Rickshaw pulling is a difficult job. It requires (দরকার) good health and physical strength. I do not have enough physical strength (শক্তি) and good health. But I am accustomed (অভ্যস্ত) to pulling the rickshaw very carefully but slowly. I can easily pull it with comfort. Moreover, as I am the owner of the rickshaw, I do not have anxiety (দুশ্চিন্তা). Though my son is a brilliant (মেধাবী) university student, he pulls my rickshaw for two hours a day in order to relieve (লাঘব করা) my labour. He does not feel ashamed of pulling the rickshaw. He considers pulling the rickshaw for two hours to be a kind of physical exercise. So he enjoys a sound body and a sound mind.

A rich person may belittle my work. But I am proud to be a rickshaw puller because I work very hard to earn money. I am an honest man and I earn with diligence (পরিশ্রম করা) and honesty. Almost every rich person in this world is more or less dishonest and immoral (অনৈতিক). So I am much happier than a rich person. I do not understand how much service a rich person renders to the society. But everybody knows that many people become rich by plundering (লুট করা) the money and wealth of the poor people. Conversely (পক্ষান্তরে), a rickshaw puller renders a great service to the society. As there are innumerable (অসংখ্য) rickshaw pullers in our country, innumerable poor people get the opportunity to go from one place to another place by their rickshaws. In fact, rickshaws are the only road transports of the poor. Many rich people also enjoy moving from place to place by rickshaws.

Therefore, nobody should disregard (অবজ্ঞা করা) a rickshaw puller. If I were an educated man, I would not adopt rickshaw pulling as my profession. But I am very happy that I maintain my family with my honest income.
