Composition : The Rivers of Bangladesh

The Rivers of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is called The Rivers of Bangladesh beacause Bangladesh is a land of rivers. Many rivers crisscross (এঁকেবেঁকে চলা) the country. The small rivers rise in the rains and dry up in winter.

There are hundreds of big and small rivers in our country. The padma, the Meghna, the Jamuna, the Teesta, the Dhalesauari, the Madhumati, the Mahananda, the Karnafully, etc. are our big the rivers of Bangladesh.

The small rivers are (The Rivers of Bangladesh) : the Nabaganga, the Chitra, the Buriganga, the Sitalakkha, the Rupsha, the Atrai etc. The beautiful cornfields of our country are the gifts of these big and small rivers. The rivers bring enough silt and make the soil fertile. Our farmers largely (অত্যধিক পরিমাণে) depend on the rivers for cultivation (চাষাবাস).

Our rivers are a great source of wealth. They abound (পরিপূর্ণ) with many kinds of fishes and plants. The proverbial Hilsha fish abounds in the Padma, the Meghna, the Jamuna and some other small rivers. The fish which we catch in the rivers meet our local needs. However, we also can export fish to foreign countries.

A lot of birds like cranes, storks, ducks, pankaris, etc, live in the rivers. These birds add to our natural beauty. They are also used as foods.

Our rivers are also the sources of energy. The water of the rivers can be utilized (কাজে লাগা) for the production of electricity. The Karnafuly Hydro-Electric Project is an instance (উদাহরণ) of this. It produces a lot of electricity. Our rivers play an important role in our transport system. Transport (চলাচল) by river is much cheaper and easier than by land in our country. We cannot think of our communication system without rivers. For this reason, the big towns, bazars and business centers stand on the rivers. Boats, launches, steamers, cargoes (মালবাহী জাহাজ) etc. are the water transports.

Our rivers (The Rivers of Bangladesh) help our trade and commerce. Many mills and factories are built on the banks of rivers. Our commercial products (উৎপাদিত দ্রব্য) are transported by rivers.

Rivers have some demerits also. In the rainy seasons they overflow (উপর দিয়ে প্রবাহিত হওয়া) their banks and cause floods. They wash away many houses and lives. After flood some water-borne (পানি বাহিত) diseases break out and kill innumerable (অসংখ্য) people.

The progress and prosperity of our country depend a lot on our rivers. They also have a great role in our literature and way of life. But it is a matter of great regret (পরিতাপ) that many of our rivers are
gradually (ক্রমস) dying (শুকিয়ে যাওয়া) out.
